DR. FREDERICK HOYT, Emeritus Professor of History
It is with a sad heart that we announce the death of Dr. Frederick Hoyt, who passed away in his sleep on June 27, 2012, at the age of 92.
Dr. Hoyt was a fixture at La Sierra, having arrived first as a student, completing a degree in history interrupted by six years of service in the United States Navy during World War II. He completed his doctoral degree at Claremont Graduate University, returning to La Sierra as member of the faculty in the early 1950s. He served with distinction until the mid-1990s, at which point he was granted the status of Emeritus Professor.
During his four decades of service to the institution, Dr. Hoyt excelled in teaching and service and was one of the first members of the faculty to truly embrace scholarship, spending a year as a Fulbright Scholar in the Philippines.
Dr. Hoyt was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian, and is survived by a daughter, Corinne Hoyt Cook, her husband Robert, granddaughter Megan, who is a Global Studies major at La Sierra, grandson Andrew & his wife Erin, and great-grandson Liam Hoyt Cook.
Funeral services for Dr. Frederick G. Hoyt will be held on Sunday, July 15, in the main sanctuary of the La Sierra University Church. There will be a viewing at 3pm and the main service at 4pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Frederick G. Hoyt Endowed Scholarship at La Sierra University. For information on this scholarship, please contact Cassandra Hicks in Advancement at (951) 785-2157.
