    D Tinianow

Widely considered one of the most influential film directors of all time,
Akira Kurosawa is familiar to all filmgoers, even if you have never seen a Kurosawa film. This is because of the number of film directors who have been inspired by Kurosawa. George Lucas, for example, acknowledges Kurosawa's film The Hidden Fortress as inspiration for the Star Wars saga.
This course examines Kurosawa's personal history and his development as a director. Films from his entire career will be viewed and discussed. The influence of Kurosawa on the film world will be examined. The study of Kurosawa's work and career is essential for both aspiring film creators and serious students of film. This course also examines some
    specific aspects of Japanese culture.

  • ENGL-425T

Transcendentalism is the first American-originated cultural movement. While it traces its roots to German philosophy and British Romanticism, its defining traits are bound up with American social phenomena: Puritan work ethic, revolutionary idealism, and individualism. This course will examine the place of Transcendentalism in American literature. We will sample three primary proponents of Transcendentalism (Emerson, Thoreau, and Whitman) and three critics of this philosophy (Melville, Hawthorne, and Poe).

  • ENGL-410C

  • This class will examine American poetry written since World War II that illustrates characteristics identified as ‘Postmodern.’ Some of these characteristics include:
    • Self-referentiality (poetry that draws attention to its own poetic nature)
    • Obfuscation (poetry that resists interpretation)
    • Sign-systems (poetry with strong non-verbal elements)
    • Performance (poetry devised for spoken / aural settings)
    • Multi-culturalism (poetry giving voice to writers often excluded from the literary tradition)
    • Aleatory (poetry written using chance procedures)
    • As these big words should suggest, many of these poems will be challenging to analyze. At the same time, wrestling with these works will help us better comprehend our own era (or at least to comprehend why our era is so difficult to comprehend).
  • Textbook: Postmodern American Poetry: A Norton Anthology. Ed. Paul Hoover. New York: W. W. Norton, 1994. ISBN: 0-393-31090-6
