Becoming Ethernet Ready

Before your computer can connect to the Internet, there are a few simple things you need to do.

  1. Sign a network application form. Provide by yours Deans, this form outlines general usage policies and is required for students to use our network.

  2. Get a Ethernet Card . If your computer already has a Ethernet card, then great, you can go on to step 3. If not, then you will need to go to your local electronics store and buy an Ethernet Card. Make sure you have an expansion slot available in your compuyter before you purchase the card. If you have questions, please consult you PC manual.

  3. Get an Ethernet cable (patch cord). In order to connect your computer (and Ethernet card) to the internet, you will need to plug an Ethernet cable into your card and also into the Ethernet port in you room. You can purchase this calbe at the same time you buy your card.

  4. Now that you have Ethernet card and cable, it's time to install them into your computer.

  5. First turn off and unplug your computer and any peripheral devices, such as a printer.
    Remove the computer's cover. If you have questions, check with you users manual.
    Unscrew and remove the solid protection plate at the back of any free expansion slot.
    Insert Ethernet card firmly into the expansion slot. (Do not force - aply gentle pressure).
    Tighten the screw on protection plate, reattach case, and attach components.
    Plug Ethernet cable into back of Ethernet card and into Ethernet port located in your room.

  6. Next you will need to install the drivers for Ethernet card:

  7. Turn on your computer.
    Windows 95 should detect a new card and prompt you to insert driver diskette. (If Windows 95 does not detect your network card, consult network card documentation).
    Reboot your computer.

  8. Add TCP/IP Protocol

  9. Open your network control panel.
    Select Microsoft & TCP/IP.
    Type OK to install TCP/IP and then click OK to leave Network setep. (Do not manually configure TCP/IP. Once you reboot your computer it will add this automatically for you*).

  10. Test you network

    Reboot you computer.
    Select the Start Menu and click Run.
    Type Telnet inet.lasierra.edu and press enter. In a few seconds you should see a login prompt for the mail server. If you don't this, please recheck the steps above.
