What does my student need to do in case of sickness?
When you have one of the largest Schools of Nursing in this part of the country, chances are one can get a great diagnosis from anywhere on campus! Actually, an infirmary is provided and staffed by live-in RN's. There is no charge for seeing a nurse or using the infirmary, and they have regular office hours and are on-call all other times. Plus, they are about the nicest people you'll meet which makes getting sick almost a pleasure. Health Services phone number is 909.785.2200.
What is the worship policy?
We wish we could say that it's the same as in heaven: everyone wants to be at worship, regardless! But being 'a little less than the angels,' residence hall worships are held three times over five days. Students are required to attend one of the three. And we have a chapel service on Thursday mornings at 11:00 a.m., when the whole school shuts down and heads to church. Then there's Friday evening service, 1st Service, which is about as close as it gets to heaven because of the great turnout. That one is not required.
What are the dress codes?
The word "principle" is what works here, and "appropriateness". "Modest" as defined by a historical understanding (not the latest fads, like have you seen where guys wear their slacks at about thigh level and their boxers 10 inches up over that? That's hysterical, not historical.), and "appropriate", which means firemen wear their gear for fires, gymnasts wear their tights for the beam, and students wear their school clothes for learning. But more specifically, most students are fine wearing jeans and slacks to class, and shirts with collars, though some like clean T-shirts. Bare feet don't work. Hats are for sun protection and sports. Dresses are terribly feminine and are always in style unless they are mini-skirts, which shouldn't be worn.
Can my student survive at La Sierra without a car?
We'll make you a deal: we'll tell you the truth if you promise not to tell your student where you got the information... you can survive without a car! Unlike most of America, where it's believed that the Constitution, Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights all stress we were made to move with four wheels under us, there's plenty to do and lots of ways to get around without a personal automobile. Now, unless your student is working in town where the money is a little better than campus, or you want your student to come home more often a car is very handy. But for saving money, let the other parents pay for the car and little green tree air freshener, while your child rides for free! We know we did!
