Word from the OISS Office

The OISS will have limited services between March 21 - April 2. OPT/CPT applications, I-20 Extensions, and change of programs will not be processed during this time. If you are finishing your classes this quarter and want to apply for OPT, PLEASE make sure to come to our office by Tuesday, March 20 at 4:30pm. Registration holds extensions and other office services will available during normal business hours.

Immigration Update

New Direct Filing Rules for Forms I-129 and I-539

Beginning April 2, 2007, Forms I-129 and I-539 must be filed according to new bi-specialization filing rules for those forms.

Form I-129 is the petition used for many nonimmigrant worker categories, such as H-1B and O-1. Form I-539 is used for changes and extensions of nonimmigrant status, and for F-1 and M-1 reinstatement. Read more.

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates Endorses Immigration Reform

In Senate testimony on maintaining U.S. competitiveness, Microsoft’s Bill Gates advocates for immigration reform that eliminates the nonimmigrant intent requirement for international students, increases availability of H-1B visas, and expedites green card status for highly skilled workers. Gates’ remarks on immigration reform are on p. 9 of his testimony. Read more.
