Word from the OISS Office Upcoming Events

There are several students whose I-20s will be expiring on June 18, 2005. Please take a moment to look at your I-20; if it is expiring, you will have to do the following as soon as possible:

  1. Complete the Program Extension form (available outside OISS).
  2. Have your evaluator (undergraduate students) or advisor (graduate students) sign the Program Extension form testifying that you do, in fact, need more time to complete your program. Extensions can not be processed due to lack of academic progress.
  3. Clear your finances with the Office of Student Financial Services (if you have an outstanding balance, you will need a written confirmation attached to your Program Extension from your SFS advisor).
  4. Return the Program Extension to our office NO LATER than June 3, 2005.

If you are finishing your studies this quarter and are returning to your home country after graduation, please let us know. We need to take care of your paperwork and SEVIS status. Otherwise, you will continue to have charges for medical insurance and may have future problems with getting visas.

May 27th Last Day to Apply for OPT

Students finishing Spring quarter 2005 who would like to apply for Post-Completion Optional Practical Training (OPT), need to apply not later than May 27th. NO OPT applications for spring will be taken after that date. Students finishing their classes during the summer quarter should start applying for their OPT in early June.

Remember: If you have applied for OPT, you cannot leave the country unless you have secured a job! Read more. If you applied for an OPT card and it has been over 90 days since you received your receipt and you still do not have your EAD card, you can make an appointment through Info Pass to get your temporary OPT card at the local USCIS office in San Bernardino . Go to the Info Pass web site. Get driving directions to the San Bernardino USCIS Office. Check your case status now (you will need your WAC number).

DHS publishes rule on 20,000 slots for U.S. master's and higher degree holders

On May 5, 2005, DHS published a rule to implement the 20,000 H-1B numbers added by the H-1B Visa Reform Act. Under the rule, the first 20,000 beneficiaries of I-129 petitions filed for new employment or for a change of employer are exempt from being counted against the H-1B cap if the beneficiary has earned a master’s degree or higher from a U.S. institution of higher education. The rule reopens the filing window for FY 2005 numbers for those who qualify, starting May 12, 2005. The rule also establishes a new general counting methodology for the H-1B cap. Read more.
