SEVIS & Christmas Travel
All international students planning to travel this winter break must check with the Office of International Student Services prior to purchasing plane tickets. We need to make sure SEVIS has your correct status listed. This includes students in OPT. Failure to do so may mean you cannot return to the U.S. in January.
And if you are traveling, do not forget to come have your I-20 signed. Don't forget that in order for us to sign your I-20, you must be in good status and not have a balance. Turn around for I-20 signatures is 24 hours, so plan accordingly. Students traveling home from the countries requiring special registration, do not forget to report to the ICE office at airport before leaving. Read more... |

H-1B Changes Included in FY2005 Appropriations Bill
The pending FY2005 omnibus appropriations bill (see article above) includes the "H-1B Visa Reform Act of 2004," which contains significant provisions affecting the H–1B specialty worker category, including a new $500 "fraud prevention and detection fee" that all employers will have to pay. |

USCIS Publishes Official FY2005 H-1B Cap Notice
On November 23, USCIS published the official Federal Register notice that the FY2005 H-1B cap had been reached as of October 1, 2004. The entire supply of FY2005 H-1B slots had already been allocated by the first day of the fiscal year to employers who had filed FY2005 petitions in the six months preceding the start of the fiscal year. The notice also temporarily suspends e-filing for I-129 petitions, and includes instructions on how H-1B petitions will be processed until new H-1B numbers become available on October 1, 2005, the beginning of FY2006. The notice does not include any provisions granting extensions of duration of status for F-1 students; unless DHS publishes a separate notice granting such extensions, students will be treated under the same processing guidelines as all other applicants for H-1B status.
