IMMIGRATION UPDATE

Taxes Are Due April 15h
As any American who works in this country, you as an international student are required to file for taxes if you worked or were present in the U.S. at any time during 2003.

Filing for taxes is very complicated, and even though you could do it yourself with a software, we highly recommend that you either go to a professional tax service such as H&R Block or Jackson Hewitt or have someone experienced help you.

Because companies such as H&R Block and Jackson Hewitt usually charge a hefty fee, and the software will run you over $40, the Office of International Student Services has arranged for someone experienced to help you with your taxes for a minimal fee. If you are single, the fee will be $25. If you are married and you're filing jointly, the fee will also be $25. If you are married and you are filing separately, the fee will be $50.

Here is what you will need to do:

  1. Obtain your W-2 form from the Payroll Office. This should have been mailed to you if you worked at La Sierra University during 2003. If you have not received yours yet, contact the Payroll Office at 909.785.2034. If you are a transfer student and worked at your previous institution during 2003, you should also get a copy of your W-2 from that institution.
  2. Get the 2003 tax check list from the OISS. The check list is available outside the office, on the corner with all the other forms.
  3. Fill out page 5 of the 1040-NR-EZ form, also available outside the OISS.
  4. Return all the documents and forms requested in the 2003 Tax Check list in an envelope, along with the fee, to Natan in the OISS.

Your documents will be available for pick up after ten (10) working days of you turning them in into us.

REMEMBER - You must file your taxes before April 15, 2004!

OISS UPDATE

Change in Medical Insurance Policy
As many of you are already aware of, there has been a major change in the policy and coverage of your medical insurance as well as an increase in the monthly premium. The new premium is $75/month, $225/quarter, and NOT $75/quarter as it was mistakenly stated in a previous email.

The new policy DOES NOT cover any dependants, either spouses and/or children.

OISS is continuing to look for a different plan for your medical insurance. Meanwhile, however, you are still covered by GGH Worldwide Insurance until further notice.

You can obtain a copy of the new plan as well as your new insurance card from OISS during normal business hours. If you prefer, you can also print your card on-line.

To print your new insurance cards:

  1. Go on-line to GGH Students.com .
  2. Click "Sign-In"
  3. If you already registered with them, enter your email address and password. If you never logged in before, then enter your email address and select "I'm a new user." Follow the instructions. If you need your Certificate Number, contact us.
  4. Click on the upper left corner in the "My Benefits."
  5. Click on the "ID" green icon (to the right). You will need Acrobat Reader to see your card.

REMEMBER: you never know when you will need to go to the hospital, so print your insurance card ASAP!
