IMMIGRATION UPDATE

WHITE HOUSE OFFICIAL DISCUSSES FOREIGN STUDENT/SCHOLAR VISAS
On April 10, John Marburger, director of the White House's Office of Science and Technology Policy, spoke before the 28th annual American Association for the Advancement of Science Colloquium on Science and Technology Policy about the current visa processing situation as it relates to the ability of foreign technical personnel, including students and scientists, to visit the United States for meetings, research collaborations, or educational pursuits. OPTIONAL PRACTICAL TRAINING
If you are graduating this quarter or next, and you would like to apply for Optional Practical Training, please contact Natan in the Office of Intl Student Services via email to schedule an appointment. OPT applications are currently taking about six (6) months to process, so don't wait! Click here to schedule an appointment with Natan.

GRADUATION PLANS
Graduating in June? If so, please remember that you have 60 days from June 13, 2003 to either a) go home, b) request a new I-20 for a new program at LSU, or c) get a new I-20 from a different institution if you are planning on transferring out.

OTHER STUFF

INCOME TAXES ARE DUE APRIL 15!
Income taxes were due April 15. If you have not filed your taxes, you should contact an accountant to see what you can do. Maybe you can file an extension or still file with a penalty fee. Whatever your case may be, make sure you take care of this soon! :)

INSURANCE CARDS
Your insurance cards are here. Please stop by our office to pick up your card. You never know when you'll need to go to the hospital or emergency room!

REPORT FOCUSES ON POST-SEPTEMBER 11 SECURITY, INTL. EDUCATION
"The Chronicle of Higher Education" published a special report, "Closing the Gates," in its April 11 issue. The report takes an in-depth look at the impact of homeland security issues on U.S. higher education since September 11, 2001. NAFSA and its members feature prominently in the report, which includes articles about visa delays, special registration, civil liberties, FBI surveillance, international student advising, and more.
