LSU WOMEN SOCCER PREVIEW 2008

The La Sierra University Women's Soccer Team posted a 9 win season in 2007 while starting six freshmen and no seniors. With a more mature team in 2008, Head Coach Kip Shipley believes LSU is ready to elevate its game and be competitive with any team in the area.

Several Golden Eagles' received post season honors including Georgia Anagnos, who was selected Rookie of the Year for all of the NCAA DIII Independents. In addition she was voted First Team NCAA DIII Independent All-American. Starlena Murray was also voted First Team All-American at forward and Shannon Seibert was voted Second Team All-American as a midfielder. Captian Jessica Calderon was voted Honorable Mention All-American as a midfielder and was also recently honored by Riverside County Sports Hall of Fame.

Joining these All-Americans will be returner Leslie Hoffman and Serena Hernandez, who both helped anchor a defense that posted nine shut outs. Goalkeepers Jocelyn Bennett and Desiree Wood split time in the net last year with Jocelyn posting a 0.35 goals against average in almost 800 minutes of work.

Coach Shipley has gotten commitments from several area players. Briana Bunch from Arlington High School should make an immediate impact in the attack. Lindsay Moore from Centennial High School will shore up the midfield. Briana Ochoa will look to help an already solid defense, after helping Paloma Valley High School make a deep run in the CIF Playoffs last season.

Shipley received commitments from two of the top Junior College players in the area as well. Rosey Reveron, an outstanding midfielder/forward from Victor Valley College will make her debut next week with La Sierra, as will San Bernardino Valley College player Gemma Castro.

Starlena Murray will continue her assault on the record books as she looks to improve back-to -back 20 plus point seasons. Tabitha Bunch anchored the young midfield for the Golden Eagles last season and will look to do the same in 2008.

"We are really excited about the growth and the future of La Sierra women's soccer. Each player on the roster has the competitive nature to bring out the best in themselves, which will bring out the best in our program," said Shipley.

La Sierra University begins its season with a tough test at San Diego Christian College on Monday, September 1st in San Diego @ noon, and then they host two East Coast powerhouse teams, Principia College (Sept.4th) and Webster University (Sept.14th).
