WHY A PLACEMENT FILE?

If you are in the professional field of education, or if you want to compile a professional reference file, a placement file is just what you need. In the field of education, a placement file has come to be considered a necessity in the application process. This concept of availability of a professional reference file is so much a part of the education field that an employer will very often NOT consider an applicant who does not have such a file. Although placement files are not used as widely in other fields, they are still useful to those who wish to keep all of their career documents in one place.

HOW DO I OPEN MY OWN PLACEMENT FILE?

Professional files are set up and maintained at the office of Career Planning and Placement Services (CPPS) (Administration Building, Office 202). To open your placement file, you can either call or stop by CPPS to get the necessary materials for your file. To complete the process of setting up your file, please use the following instructions:

  1. Determine if your file will be Confidential (pdf) or Non-Confidential (pdf) and sign the appropriate waiver form to register your status. This form will be required before an official file can be started.
  2. Complete the personal information - please type, so that we can process it more quickly.
  3. Complete your part of the personal recommendation forms:
    1. Type your name in the space provided in the upper left-hand corner on the front of the letter, just under the letterhead.
    2. Type all information requested on the back of the recommendation forms in the NOTE TO THE CANDIDATE section of the recommendation form and mail or deliver the forms to at least three persons for personal/professional references.
  4. Return the Waiver form and the Personal Information Sheets to the Placement Office at your convenience. Please note, however, that your file is not considered completed until all forms have been turned to the Placement Office.
It is your responsibility to make sure that your file is complete. When setting up your file, we suggest that you call us and check to see if we have received your references, transcripts, and other materials. Please do not assume that because you have requested these materials, they have automatically been received by our office. CPPS is not responsible for items not received.

WHAT IF I HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT MY PLACEMENT FILE?

In the course of setting up your Placement File, you are bound to have a few questions. If you do, please feel free to call or come in and see us here at CPPS. We are located in the Administration Building, Office 202. Our phone number is (951) 785-2237.
