Job Placement

Before you start searching for an Internship online, read carefully the Internet Job Search Tips.

There are now 40,000 commercial employment Web sites. That doesn't include sites run directly by employers. It is important to pick two or three that meet your needs.

  1. Use the Internet with, not instead of, other media. The Internet is growing in importance for recruiters. But job hunters should use it to supplement a conventional search.
  2. Get out and about. Finding a job will almost certainly mean a face-to-face interview. Use the Internet after-hours and use work hours for networking and to get your foot in the door.
  3. Target your use of the internet. Find two or three job-search site that suit your needs. That way you can make the most of the resources and save yourself time.
  4. Look for sites in your field. Use trade publications to find sites that are well-known in your area of interest. If employers don't know about the site, they won't post jobs there.
  5. Posting your resume isn't enough. If you have a job, it isn't even wise. Requesting anonymity may hamper your chances if you're out of work. But you still want to make sure your resume lands in the right hands. Look for sites with tools to make sure that happens.
  6. You're a job-site consumer. Shop for sites like any other product. Play off cost against usefulness. If you're tight on time or have special needs, you may have to pay more.
