CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR NEWEST ALUMNI!

Help Can't Wait: Volunteer Opportunities in the American Red Cross

For the last Psychology Colloquium this quarter, Lovelyn Santos-Chapman (Psychology alumna) will present "Help Can't Wait: Volunteer Opportunities in the American Red Cross." Ms. Santos-Chapman is currently working as a social worker at Upland Community Counseling--County of San Bernardino Department of Behavioral Health. In May she received an award from the County Board of Supervisors for Excellence in Public Service. She recently returned from a 3-week assignment at one of the respite centers near Ground Zero in New York as part of her Disaster Services Human Resources duties at the American Red Cross. As part of her volunteer work with the Red Cross, she has also responded to a number of local disasters and fire calls. The Colloquium will meet Tuesday, November 27th, at 11am in Cossentine Hall room 106. All are welcome.

Psychology Club Vespers

There will be a Psychology club Vespers at Dr. Kim's house on Friday night, Nov. 30th, from 6-8:30pm. Maps/directions are available from Dr. Martin, and the food will be provided. Lasagna, salad, bread, and dessert are on the menu.

McLean Student Research Grants

McLean Student Research Grants (MSRGs) have been instituted here in LSU's Psychology Department! MSRG awards include a $500 stipend and applications are being accepted through Friday, November 30th. See the information sheet posted on the Psychology Club Bulletin Board for details, or contact Dr. Martin!

Suzanne MallerySpirit Possession: Spiritual Infestation or Mental Illness?

For Psychology Colloquium and the Psychology Department Assembly (Tuesday, October 23, at 11am in Cossentine Hall 106) Dr. Suzanne Mallery, the newest member of the Psychology Department faculty, will present her research on spirit possession and mental illness. Dr. Mallery is a clinical psychologist with a Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Psychology, Fuller Theological Seminary. She has specialized in pediatric psychology at her internship (at the University of Minnesota) and postdoc (at Loma Linda University). Her current research focuses on long term psychosocial outcomes in childhood leukemia patients; methodological issues in the study of leukemia outcomes; early cognitive, language, and emotional development in children with velocardiofacial syndrome; and a monograph tentatively titled ""Possession, Power, and Psychopathology: Cultural and Social Contexts of Illness." Before coming to La Sierra University, Dr. Mallery was an assistant professor at the Loma Linda University Department of Psychology and a clinical supervisor at The Learning Spot, Department of Pediatrics, Loma Linda University. Dr. Mallery also holds an M.A. in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary and a B.S. in Microbiology from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Leslie Martin wins National High Jump Competition

Psychology facult member Leslie Martin is the National High Jump Champion for women aged 30-35. She is a member of USA Track and Field, and a local club called the Highlander Masters. She competed and won at the Western Regionals and California State Games. Most recently, she competed in both sprinting and high jumping at the USA Track and Field National Masters Championship in Baton Rouge, July 25-28. Read the whole story here.
