Nearly 100 members of the La Sierra University community participated in the Inland Empire chapter of the American Heart Association's 2007 "Start! Heart Walk" on Sunday, September 30 in Fairmount Park, in Riverside.
Seventy-five LSU-affiliated walkers—administrators, faculty, staff, students, and family members—helped to raise funds for the Heart Association’s fight against heart disease and stroke. An additional 21 students enrolled in the “Humans and the Environment” class helped to help staff the water stations and to clean up during and after the event. They were participating as part of their service-learning curriculum.
As pre-registrations for the event closed, La Sierra University had the second highest number of online applicants. While the final totals are still being calculated, the preliminary total raised by La Sierra University walkers was $2,400.
“Jamie Lamb, from the IE HeartWalk staff, was very pleased with La Sierra's performance in its first year of participation,” says Robert Thomas, chair of the Health and Exercise Science department, and La Sierra’s on-campus coordinator for the project. “President Randal Wisbey captained one of the teams of LSU walkers, and he reported to me that he enjoyed walking with his LSU family and hundreds of members of the Riverside community.”
