Lawrence T. Geraty, Ph.D., president-emeritus of La Sierra Univesity, has been appointed by California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to serve as a member of the California Postsecondary Education Commission. The 16-member commission advises the Governor and Legislature on higher education policy and fiscal issues.
The Commission’s primary focus is to ensure that the state’s educational resources are used effectively to provide Californians with postsecondary education opportunities. Nine commission members represent the interests of the general public. Geraty is representing the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities.
"I'm honored to have the confidence of the governor and his team and certainly look forward to assisting Inland Empire post-secondary education in any way I can," says Geraty.
Geraty retired in June 2007 as president of La Sierra University, a position he held from 1993 to 2007. Geraty previously was president of Atlantic Union College from 1985 to 1993, and an archeology professor for Andrews University from 1966 to 1985. Prior to that, he served as a minister for the Southeastern California Conference of Seventh-day Adventists from 1962 to 1966.
Former president of the American Schools of Oriental Research, Geraty is a member of the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities. He is also a member and former chair of the Greater Riverside Chamber of Commerce.
