This year marks the 60th anniversary of the initial discovery of 2,000-year-old scrolls buried in caves at the ancient settlement of Qumran near the northwestern shore of the Dead Sea.
To commemorate this important event and the resulting research tied to the Dead Sea Scrolls, the La Sierra University School of Religion, in cooperation with the San Diego Museum of Natural History, is offering a course on the Dead Sea Scrolls this autumn term. The class will meet Monday evenings from October through mid-December in San Diego to experience a significant visiting Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit at the museum and lectures by internationally respected scholars in the fields of archaeology, second-temple Judaism, early Christianity, ancient writing, and more. Additional supplemental classroom time is still being scheduled.
The Fall quarter class will cover the major aspects surrounding the discovery, interpretation and significance of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The class is open to undergraduate and graduate students as well as pastors, teachers and other professionals who wish to register for Continuing Education Units.
Students may register online via the normal registration process; others
will want to call or email the School of Religion office at 951-785-2041.
