An important branch of La Sierra University’s new Center for Student Academic Success program, a team of seven academic coaches will provide guidance to incoming first-year students beginning this fall.
These coaches are working with new first-year students to create a smooth transition from high school life to university life. Along with meeting once a week with first-year students, the coaches will team-teach University Studies 101, a seminar class.
“We’re part a bridge for new La Sierra students moving from high school to college. Along with academic help, we’ll be incorporating life experiences into our program so students will have a better chance for success,” says Keren Garcia, one of seven academic coaches.
For most of the coaches, many who are LSU alumni, their new position reflects their individual experience with LSU. Says academic coach Blaine Smith, “During my four years at LSU, I grew as a student and person. When I first came, I found a friendly, welcome atmosphere and I want to bring that back.”
Another academic coach, Rebecca Ortiz, says, “I was a transfer student to La Sierra University. At my previous school, I couldn’t find a niche. At LSU, I’ve never felt more needed or settled. I want to share this with the freshmen. We want them to realize their potential, to be capable and self-motivated.”
The coaches agree the new program mirrors the care of LSU. “We’re presenting the extent of care LSU is willing to provide,” says Emmanuel Nelson. A key part of the academic coaching involves connecting students to the departments and programs LSU offers to ensure success in their college experience.
The enthusiasm expressed by the coaches came through clearly during 11 First Year Experience summer orientation programs. During these two-day campus experiences, the coaches began meeting with freshmen as well as learning to work together to provide students with LSU resources.
“At first these coaches didn’t know their co-workers, but they’ve united as a group of mentors. They’re a diverse group through personality and experiences. They’ve come together to make this a wonderful place,” says Lynneth Solis, assistant director for the Center for Student Academic Success.
While embracing the unknown in their new position, the coaches will be defining their role on campus this upcoming year as they provide for a successful year for incoming students. “It’s a taste of excitement for this new school year; we’re in uncharted land,” says Ortiz.
