La Sierra University exercise science/wellness management freshman Kimberly
Miller has been selected to set sail with the Voyage of Understanding,
a multicultural experience connected with the international organization
Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE).
Sponsored
by British bank HSBC’s Education Trust, the Voyage of Understanding takes
48 young people from Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Korea, Mexico, Russia, South
Africa, the UK, and the US on a 10-night voyage around the North Sea. The
ship, a 197-foot long square-masted sail brig, will depart from Brixom, UK on
July 3, visiting several northern European ports before finally landing in London
on the 13th.
The multicultural
students on board will learn to live and interact with each other, developing
leadership and communication skills. There is no set itinerary, but students
will be expected to get to know each other, as well as learn how to assist with
the running of the ship.
Miller is
one of only 10 students from the United States to be accepted
on the voyage. A
La Sierra University SIFE team member, she submitted an application,
resume, and an essay on why she should be chosen to join the trip. She
is eager to set sail.
“I’m
excited to meet with other students from around the world and gain a knowledge
of their cultures,” she says. “I think my experience in
SIFE will help me on the voyage, because SIFE has opened my eyes to what’s
going on around the world.”
