The Department of Music invites the LSU campus community and friends
to experience thought-provoking art and soul-enriching music as Calico
Winds presents the first in our fall gallery chamber music series, Music
and Art at the Brandstater, sponsored in cooperation with the Department
of Art.
The Times Herald, Olean, NY, said of Calico's touring program, "The
artists [of Calico Winds] played in perfect balance with each other,
each contributing lovely tone quality and flawless intonation. An unusually
fine and beautiful program...played with rock-solid competence and interpretive
flair. It was a fantastic evening of music."
Of their CD, “Vintage America: A Musical Meritage”, a Gramophone
critic wrote, "...mingling of European classical music with
American roots music...I do find the results rather delicious. Calico
Winds bring refreshing lightness to music that is too often bellowed.
The quintet's suave phrasing, lively articulation and rhythmic buoyancy
are a delight throughout."
Don’t miss this opportunity to hear one of Southern California’s
premier ensembles, playing in one of the Inland Empire’s most intimate
and aesthetic settings. The concert will feature works by Mozart, Francaix,
Joplin, Martinu, Coleman, and Still. A special feature on the program
will be Alex Wilder’s Sextet for Marimba and Wind Quintet with
guest artist Kenneth McGrath.
