Robert Shaw,
M.D., spoke to a group of about 50 students, faculty and community
members November 4 in the Visual Arts Center. At this event Dr.
Shaw answered the question "Is it possible to raise, happy, productive,
generous children who live with a larger meaning of their place
in this world?" Dr.
Shaw says, "YES".
Dr. Shaw has enjoyed a long career working with children and their
families. Since 1958 he has maintained a private practice for family
and individual psychotherapy. Dr. Shaw's professional positions have
included Chief of Child Psychiatry In-patient Service and Chief of Child
Psychiatry Residency Training at New York's Mount Sinai Hospital, Director
of The Coney Island Mental Health Center for Children and Youth, and
Chief of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine's Family and Children's
Mental Health Services for the entire South Bronx of New York, where
he trained child psychiatry residents in community psychiatry.
After moving to Berkeley, California in 1970, he directed the Family
and Children's Mental Health Services for the City of Berkeley and developed
the Family Institute of Berkeley with his wife, Judith Shaw, M.A.. Dr.
Shaw is a frequent featured speaker at many of the nation's professional
conferences. The father of four, he lives in the San Francisco Bay Area
with his wife, Judith.
