To begin the holiday season each year La Sierra University celebrates with a Christmas tree lighting ceremony. This year the event took place Dec. 1 on the LSU commons. Elvin Rodriguez, LSU professor of music, played the accordion to begin the event. Over 100 people braved the California “cold” to attend the event.

The La Sierra University Academic Advising Octet performed in the Christmas carol sing off during the Christmas tree lighting program. Cider, hot chocolate and Christmas cookies were also served.

A group of La Sierra University students from the Angwin Hall “Club 4 Reel” sang several numbers during the Christmas carol sing off.

The winners of the coveted La Sierra University Christmas Carol Sing-Off trophy was the group Mele Ohana which means to be joyous, happy or sing family. The group performed Silver Bells. From left: Candace Jorgensen, LSU director of alumni and husband Leonard, Sue Curtis, LSU director of residential life, Henes Guerpo, LSU assistant dean of men and assistant to the athletic director, and Nancy Guerpo, LSU dean of women. “Overall everyone enjoyed it and had a good time,” says Curtis who coordinated the event.

To end the Christmas tree lighting Santa visited La Sierra University sharing candy with all and taking photos with children.
