Why:

Quilts, an American type of bedcover, chronicle the history and growth of the United States as its many people moved from east to west. They used quilts on the journey for many purposes. Quilts provided bedding for these early pioneers; these textiles were hung to divide living spaces, and they were placed on floors and tables.
The origins of patchwork, sometimes called piecework, like the origins of quilting itself, are buried in history. The earliest surviving American pieced quilts date back from the latter part of the 18th century. Most 19th century women made hundreds of quilts for themselves and their families. Patchwork quilts were made from scrap pieces of cloth, odd bits saved over the years, from the clothing of loved ones, or from materials bought expressly to be used in a quilt.
