Larry Becker La Sierra University is deeply saddened to hear of the untimely death of retired professor, Brian J. Jacques, Ph.D. Jacques, 74, was shot at his home Thursday evening, January 2, at approximately 7 p.m. He was struck by bullets fired through a window by an unknown assailant. He and his wife were the only ones at home at the time.
A professor of communication at La Sierra University from 1970 until his retirement in 1996, Jacques taught numerous speech courses and served as chair of the Communication Department during part of his tenure. Jacques had previously served as an associate professor of speech at Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Michigan. He began his career as a missionary teacher in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). He served as a teacher and educator in the Seventh-day Adventist Church for a total of 41 years. " La Sierra University campus is a tightly knit community and we are all saddened and shocked by this senseless tragedy," says Ella S. Simmons, La Sierra University provost and Vice President for Academic Administration. "Many on our campus remember Brian as an individual of consistent faith and dedicated, unselfish service. The effects of this loss will ripple around the world, because he taught so many students for so many years and our graduates live and work in practically every part of the world." Jacques is survived by his wife, Florence; two sons Daryl and Brian John; their wives Maritza and Tami; two grandchildren, Laura and Diana; step-grandson James Harrell; sister Betty Vine, and brother-in-law Kenneth Vine; and in England, brother Roy and sister-in-law Marion. A memorial service for Brian Jacques will be held on Sabbath, January 11, 2003, at 2 p.m., at the La Sierra University Seventh-day Adventist church, corner of Pierce and Sierra Vista. Because Brian’s greatest burden was for Christian education, the family has requested that his memory be honored by your contribution to the Brian Jacques Memorial Education Fund for either the Yucca Valley Adventist Team School, or the Bangladesh Assistance Fund. Checks should be made payable to the La Sierra University Seventh-day Adventist Church, and marked for the appropriate fund.
