Riverside, Calif., November, 2001--Spanning three centuries and two millennia (barely!), the 1898 one-room schoolhouse was situated in the green and gold hills of northern San Diego County. At the moment, its sitting on a flatbed truck halfway up Two Bit Mountain, on the campus of La Sierra University.
The schoolhouse, once part of San Pasqual Academy and owned by the Southeastern California Conference (SECC) of Seventh-day Adventists, will become a living museum for elementary school children. Its chalkboards and desks, its rustic paneled walls, and small front porch, will live again as part of the Universitys School of Education, and become a childrens field trip destination. There is mention of a costumed schoolmaster or schoolmarm to teach visitors about the role of Seventh-day Adventist education in Californias history.
San Pasqual Academy was sold to a San Diego County youth rehabilitation program several years ago, with the income from the sale being distributed in the SECC churches. The old schoolhouse will be preserved at La Sierra University for many years to come.
