Earl Gillespie worked as an accountant for the school for 51 years, and Gwen Gillespie served for 30 years as assistant to three presidents of the University, two deans in the School of Education, a professor in the School of Religion, and most recently for each of La Sierra University's four Provosts and vice-presidents of Academic Administration. Gwen's tireless efforts did not stop there: She was also secretary of the commencement committee during her tenure. For Gwen, whom colleagues consider to be one of the most professional administrative assistants, her most memorable experience at La Sierra University was meeting her husband Earl. She says, "I have found it an enjoyable experience being able to work in the same institution as my husband," and smilingly adds, "this has strengthened our marriage." They have found a common bond through working together. Gwen also appreciates the dedication of the people she has worked with over the years. Earl has thoroughly enjoyed working at La Sierra University. "The people have been the best in the world," says Earl. He will miss the companionship he has found with friends on the campus. People often stop to admire this couple's devotion and courtesy toward each other. Most people will remember seeing Earl waiting patiently for Gwen at lunchtime or seeing them walk into the building together. They have been examples of the bond couples want to form with each other. University President Lawrence T. Geraty says of the Gillespies: "Gwen and Earl epitomize what La Sierra University is all aboutunselfish lives of Christian service. Together with their more than 80 years of service to the campus, they have made a transforming impact on their work places and all those who have come in contact with them there. The University salutes this remarkable couple in whom so much of the history of the campus resides! We will sorely miss our daily contact with them but wish them well in their hard-earned retirement. And we thank Earl and Gwen for a lifetime of committed service to La Sierra University." The couple plans to remain in the community while traveling and enjoying time with their family. |
