Riverside, Calif., December, 2001 -- Black students from La Sierra and Loma Linda Universities retreated to the San Bernardino Mountains at Camp Cedar Falls for a fun-filled power weekend, November 15-17. The event was sponsored by BSA (Black Student Association), BHPSA (Black Health Professional Student Association), and BALL (Black Alumni of Loma Linda and La Sierra Universities).

Students, faculty, and staff from both universities spent the time meeting and getting to know each other (vespers, worship, forum, and Survivor theme talent show). Ella Simmons, EdD, La Sierra University provost and vice president for Academic Administration, had this to say about the weekend: "As I reflect on the events of the past weekend’s student retreat sponsored by BSA, BHPSA, and BALL, my thoughts turn to the wonderful spirit of cooperation we experienced in seeking to find more and better ways of collaborating. Everyone there seemed to be committed to one purpose––that is, clear and open communication that will lead to stronger networks that will provide greater support to black students at La Sierra and Loma Linda."

The mission of the Black Alumni of Loma Linda and La Sierra Universities is to give financial and moral support to the black students of both universities through scholarships and mentoring.

This has enabled the Black Student Association to have as its mission: To increase the number of culturally responsible professionals who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.

The Black Health Professional Student Association of Loma Linda University has a similar mission: to increase the number of black students recruited and matriculated at Loma Linda University; to sponsor programs for minorities to encourage their entrance into health care professions; to facilitate an atmosphere of professional excellence, social development, and spiritual growth; to raise an awareness of diversity and minority issues at Loma Linda University.

The missions of the three groups will enable students to implement the mission of La Sierra University in their lives by seeking knowledge through service.

Students and alumni of both institutions were able to reflect on the mission of these organization and how best to implement them in their lives as a way of helping to fulfill the missions of these entities. The power weekend enabled attendees to continue the mission. They also left the cool fresh mountain air invigorated, refreshed, and empowered to face the fast-paced academic world again.
