Riverside, Calif., October, 2000-- On Tuesday October 3, 2000, La Sierra University celebrated Founders'‚ Day. On the 78th anniversary of the founding of the University, President Lawrence T. Geraty, PhD, gave the State of the University address in Matheson Chapel.

In his address, Dr. Geraty reviewed the past, with an eye for the future. He divided the history of the University into four periods: the academy, junior college, La Sierra College, Loma Linda University/La Sierra campus, and finally, La Sierra University. In looking back at these eras, he remembered the people who were instrumental in the founding and development of the University. He also looked at the past achievements of the University, both academically and in physical assets.

Dr. Geraty then turned to the present, which he called the fifth period. At this point, he called attention to the growth of La Sierra University in terms of administration, faculty, staff, and students. He made the point that the leadership team now reflects the student body. He welcomed new faculty and staff; as well as Ella Simmons, MA, EdD, the new vice president for Academic Affairs and the provost of the University. In ending his speech, the president reaffirmed administrative commitments. (See sidebar for commitments.)

Dr. Geraty closed his address by quoting several verses of Psalm 90.*

Founders'‚ Day ended with a picnic on the campus mall. Students, faculty, and staff turned out to enjoy the picnic from 5 to 7 p.m. Traditional picnic food (hot dogs and watermelon wedges) was served. Anyone wearing a La Sierra University shirt received a prize. A balmy ocean breeze contributed to the festive "air," as balloons skipped across the grounds.

* Psalm 90, NIV
Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations.
Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
Relent, O LORD! How long will it be? Have compassion on your servants.
Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.
Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen trouble.
May your deeds be shown to your servants, your splendor to their children.
May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us-- yes, establish the work of our hands.
