Riverside, Calif., August, 2000 -- "The One and The Many" will be the theme at the Stahl Center Sabbath at La Sierra University, Oct. 28, in the La Sierra University Church.

Leading the processional for the annual event will be the dozens of campus and community individuals who will participate in two "tile-painting" Sundays in September. The colorfully painted tiles will be installed as part of a design motif for the university's "Path of the Just." The "Path," slated to become an international walkway of patios and groves, will include trees named in honor of individuals whose lives of altruistic service serve as role models for all campus visitors.

Initial names approved by the La Sierra Board of Trustees include Adventist missionary educators Fernando and Ana Stahl, Habitat for Humanity co-founders Millard and Linda Fuller, Adventist "China Doctor" Harry Miller, human rights crusader John Weidner, Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel, and South Africa Reconciliation Committee Chair Desmond Tutu.

The annual Stahl Center Sabbath will feature student mission reports at 9:30 a.m. along with music from the All Africa Choir. The worship hour will start at 10:45 a.m. and will include a processional with students and friends bearing international artifacts, candleholders created from clay at key mission sites worldwide and painted tiles for the "Path." The La Sierra Music Department's Wind Ensemble plus choral ensembles will be featured, in addition to the singing of anthems for congregation and the musical ensembles.

"The 'Path' honors individuals whose lives of service inspire us to give for the greater whole," said Charles Teel, Stahl Center director. "In the same way, these tiles are 'individual' in nature and assume a small part of the whole as they become linked with the 'many.'"

The Stahl Center for World Service at La Sierra creates and implements humanitarian and service projects at home and throughout the world in order to pass on the vision of world service. The center embraces the prophetic tone and clarion call for justice and Christian action so eloquently expressed in Scripture: "Let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream." Amos 5:24.
