Riverside, Calif., April, 2000--The back inside cover of Forbes magazine always includes a series of witty or famous quotations. And tradition has it that the section concludes with a Scripture verse.

For the April 3 edition of the national business magazine, the following verse was chosen (with no seeming regard for contemporary sensibilities): "It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house." (Proverbs 21:9)

The contributor of this biblical bon mot? None other than La Sierra University's own Maryard Lowry, director of corporate and foundation relations. The longtime library director, who moved into his current position at the beginning of this month, said the potentially contentious submission has nothing to do with any latent or overt misogynistic ax-grinding.

Rather, he suspected that the verse's "tongue and cheek" qualities would lend to quick publication. He was right. He sent the verse to the New York City-based publication in March and in April his name was in print: "Maynard Lowry, Riverside, Calif."

For his effort he won an 800-page book of famous quotations published by the magazine.
