Riverside, Calif., May 24, 1999--La Sierra University will give approximately $275,000 in grants, awards, and scholarships to 140 students at its annual Awards Assembly at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 27, 1999 in the Alumni Pavilion, 4700 Pierce Street, Riverside. The funds come from 83 grants, awards and scholarships. The largest award of $3,1012 comes from the George H. Mayr Foundation Scholarship. The $275,000 represents a major increase from last year's assembly in which almost $200,000 were given to students. The awards given at this assembly are a small percentage of the approximately $2.5 million in grants and scholarships the university gives out annually. Some of the scholarships are general, and some are given in specific areas. While some awards are based on need, emphasis is placed on a student's GPA and other academic involvement. "These scholarships represent more than money. They are set up to honor people and put forward certain values and standards that will live on for future generations," says Greg Gerard, vice president for advancement and university relations. "Many have been established to remember people's goals and dreams, their lives and their contributions." Nearly 20 donors attended the Awards Assembly and subsequent donor luncheon, hosted by La Sierra University for donors, presenters, deans and administrators.
