Riverside, Calif., September 28, 1999--Dr. Leslie Martin, assistant professor of psychology at La Sierra University, will be presented with the 1999 Certificate of Merit Award at the National Academic Advising Association's (NACADA) annual October 9, 1999 conference in Denver, Colo. Dr. Martin is the ninth consecutive Merit Award recipient from La Sierra University.

NACADA, a non-profit organization, exists to promote quality academic advising. The association has over 5,000 members consisting of faculty, professional advisors, administrators, and counselors.

Martin received several nominations for the Certificate of Merit. Iris M. Landa, director for academic advising at LSU, and Gloria Hicinbothom, chair of the psychology department at LSU, were among those who believed the popular psychology professor was deserving of the honor. According to Hicinbothom, Martin, "excels in all three areas of faculty responsibilities: teaching, research and service."

Several of Martin's students and advisees also recommended her for the award, citing her genuine interest in both their scholastic and personal lives. To many she has become a friend and mentor, in addition to advisor, teacher, researcher and Psychology Club sponsor.

This past year, Martin received research funding from the National Institutes of Health for exploration of personality consistency and change from childhood through mid-adulthood. During Winter Quarter, Martin had two articles accepted for publication in major peer-reviewed journals and agreed to co-author a health psychology textbook. Since joining the faculty of the psychology department at LSU in 1996, Leslie has mentored several research projects in which undergraduates are the principle investigator-a role that is reserved for advance graduate students at most colleges and universities.
