Dr. John Kerbs Passes Away

Riverside, Calif., April 5, 1999--Dr. John Kerbs, senior assistant to the president at La Sierra University, died on Friday, April 2, 1999. A memorial service will be held at the La Sierra University Church at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 9. Monetary gifts may be made to The John Kerbs Memorial Scholarship Fund in lieu of flowers. These funds will support students at La Sierra University and Union College.

"In the short time he has been with us, we have grown to appreciate and respect his sincere Christian manner and good Counsel," said La Sierra University President Lawrence T. Geraty.

Kerbs joined La Sierra University in September of 1998. Prior to that he served as president of Union College for seven years and has a total of 43 years of experience in education at all levels within the Seventh-day Adventist community.

Kerbs earned his bachelors degree in theology from La Sierra in 1956. In 1983 Kerbs was named La Sierra University's College of Arts and Sciences "Alumnus of the Year." He also met his wife, Nancy, while a student at La Sierra and they were married in the La Sierra University Church.

Kerbs served as the dean of admissions at the Loma Linda University Medical School from 1988-91. Prior to that he served for seven years as principal of Loma Linda Academy.

Kerbs is the author of "Your People Problems" and "How to Belong When You Are Already a Member." He is also the recent recipient of the North American Award for Excellence for making a significant contribution to Adventist education in at least two institutions.

Kerbs is survived by his wife, Nancy Shurtliff Kerbs, and two sons: Jeffrey, who is a 1983 graduate of the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry; and James, who is a 1987 graduate of the Loma Linda University School of Medicine. Kerbs son, John, preceded him in death in 1983.
