Installing a proxy server on
Internet Explorer 4.0 for Windows

These are the instructions for installing a proxy server so you can reach the library databases from off-campus.

Set up the proxy server
  1. Start Internet Explorer.
  2. Go to the menu bar at the top of your screen and select View->Internet Options. (You can also select Tools->Internet Options.)
  3. Click on the Connection tab at the top of the Internet Options window. Select the dial-up or direct connection you are currently using (usually there will be only one). Click the Settings... button next to it.If you are using a DSL connection, click on LAN Settings instead.
  4. Click on the box next to Access the Internet using a proxy server to enable a proxy server (there should now be a checkmark in the box), and then click Advanced.
  5. In the Address of proxy to use box, type proxy.lasierra.edu. In the Port box, type 8080.
  6. Click the OK button for each opened window.
Log in to the proxy server

As soon as you click on a link or try to open a new page, Internet Explorer will try to connect to the proxy server so you can log in. You should see a pop-up screen that says "Enter Network Password." If it says anything else, and in particular if it's the name of the database you're trying to log into, you need to go back and make sure you have set up the proxy server correctly.

  1. In the Username box, enter the following username: libdatabase
  2. In the Password box, enter the password you obtained by following the instructions on the previous screen.
  3. Click the OK button.

That's all: you have now logged into the proxy server and will be able to use the library services. Go to the databases page at http://www.lasierra.edu/library/onlinedb_enc/ and begin searching.

Leaving the proxy server

A proxy server connection slows your computer down slightly, since communications have to be relayed through it rather than passing directly from computer to computer. Also, you will need to log into the proxy server every time you are inactive or offline for more than a few minutes. For these reasons, it is a good idea to disable the proxy server when you are done searching our databases. To disable the proxy server, do the following:

  1. At the top of your screen, select Tools->Internet Options.
  2. Click the Connections tab at the top of the window.
  3. Click in the checked box by Use a proxy server. it should now be empty.

That's all there is to it!
