Finding the Internet Gold

Sources for Locating the Best Internet Resources

With millions and millions of Web sites indexed by a variety of search engines, it is very easy to locate Internet sources on almost any topic. However, many of the existing sites contain unreliable or poor quality information. How can one find the "good stuff," that is, highly reliable and high quality resources?

A good way of quickly locating the best Web sites is through the use of directories that point only to "relevant" or "selected" sites. Web directories have been set up in different ways and use different criteria to include and arrange Web sites. However, they all have one element in common: human beings making the decision of what to include and what topic to list it under. In some cases like in Yahoo, the editors of the directory decide if a site is relevant or not to include in particular subject area. They make no attempt to rank that site or to evaluate its quality. Other directories such as the Argus Clearinghouse, eBlast and Lycos 5%, give an actual rating to each site they list.
