As a student in Engl-005, you have also registered for Engl-005L, Introduction to Composition Lab. During your lab time you will complete lab work in the La Sierra University Writing Center that will help improve your writing assignments and prepare you for the end-of-term Writing Placement Exam.

Conferences

Your primary lab activity will be weekly one-on-one conferences with a Writing Coach. Your Coach will help you formulate and revise writing assignments, improving your writing skills.

Your conference will last 25 minutes and will begin at either the top of the hour of your scheduled lab time, or 30 minutes past the hour. For the first week, go to lab at the top of the hour; your Writing Coach will then inform you the time for your remaining conferences.

Take with you to the Writing Center any work that you’ve completed for that week’s writing assignment. At each conference you will receive a form that indicates what you discussed with the Writing Coach; give this form to your class instructor in order to receive grades for lab work.

SIGN IN AND OUT each time you visit the Writing Center, as evidence of your visit.

Practice Exams

In addition to weekly conferences, you will complete three “practice exams.” These exams will be very similar to the Writing Placement Exam, and they MUST be written in the La Sierra University Writing Center.

Practice exams should be completed according to the following schedule:

Note that you have a three-week period for completing each exam; you may select any one lab session during each period to write the exam.

After completing each exam, submit it to a Writing Coach, who will then send it to your instructor. Exams will be included in your Rdng-001 grade.

Your instructor may also ask you to discuss your practice exams with a Writing Center Coach, or you may choose to discuss exams with coaches in order to better prepare yourself for the Writing Placement Exam. To schedule a conference with a Writing Coach, email the Writing Center or drop by in person; some ‘drop in’ appointments may be available.

Conferences are 25 minutes in length, beginning at the top of the hour or at half past. At each conference you will receive a form that you may share with your instructor indicating what you discussed with the Writing Coach.
