In recent years, drama has appeared in
colorful and diverse manifestations across the La Sierra campus.
In English/Communication, several dramatic literature courses
are now available, which consider diverse readings from the ancient
Greek
tradition,
the Elizabethan Age, and the contemporary stage. Thanks to the
inspiration of our graduate students, regularly scheduled dramas
are now sponsored
each quarter by the department. At the same time, the Music Department
has staged several successful "Broadway-style" productions. Within
the past year, three student events have been directed and produced
by undergraduates.
Clearly, the evidence suggests a growing
trend in student interest and participation in drama. Since most regional
academies and high schools now have drama clubs and/or departments,
new students arrive at LSU expecting theater in our classrooms and
on our stages. Coincidentally, recruitment for English majors by way
of our fledgling theater program has been quite successful.
