Seven Essential Elements of Quality Disability Documentation
  Educational Testing Center (ETS)

  1. Student calls and then meets with the director of the Office of Disability Services (ODS) to begin the interactive process and share information.
  2. Student either presents “current” documentation or explores resources for an educational assessment off campus.
  3. The director of the ODS evaluates documentation and either requests more information, further testing, or approves it. The ODS must assure that the documentation provided establishes the individual as a person with a disability AND provides a rationale for reasonable accommodations.
  4. Once the documentation has been received, a student must request services and accommodations by meeting with the ODS director. This will NOT been done automatically and must be initiated by the student.
  5. Accommodation decisions are made on a case-by-case basis, considering the impact of a particular student’s disability within the specific context in which the student must function.
  6. If the student qualifies to receive disability services he schedules an appointment with the director early each quarter (within the first 2 weeks) to discuss the student’s learning needs and accommodations for the quarter. The ODS will NOT give accommodations without having the opportunity for discussion with the student.  It is important to plan ahead: The ODS needs at least one week to process requests (although it can take up to two weeks). So the earlier the student schedules an appointment with the director, the earlier services will begin. Therefore, if a student requests accommodations for the first time in a quarter a few days before a test, it is unlikely that their needs will be met on time.
  7. It is the student’s responsibility to communicate their needs with their professors. This is done by sharing the accommodation letter provided by the ODS and then discussing with each professor how arrangements to meet those accommodations will be made. This must be done within the first ten days of the quarter or from the time of receiving the accommodation letter.
  8. The student is responsible for discussing with their professor if an accommodation for a particular class is not working. If a problem cannot be resolved by talking with the professor, the student should contact the ODS.
  9. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the Office of Disability Services if he has any questions or concerns regarding academic accommodations.
