as varied as people themselves dealing with
concerns about relations with others, coping
with a personal crisis, clarifying career
goals and exploring options, or wanting advice
on how to help a friend. The social or emotional
concerns that occur occasionally in most people's
lives can interfere with effective functioning
and academic performance. Problems in interpersonal
relationships, marital or family conflicts,
loneliness, depression, and feelings of inadequacy
are issues students often encounter. Talking
with a counselor in a confidential, interactive,
and non-judgmental atmosphere can aid self-understanding
and resolution of personal issues. The Counseling Center is located

Crisis
Information
To maintain the academic atmosphere of the residence
halls, students are expected to conduct themselves
in a considerate manner with regard to the rights,
obligation and safety needs of others. Accordingly,
students are obliged to live in a cooperative
manner with their roommates and other community
members.
Trained and caring staff members provide assistance
to students experiencing temporary emotional
crisis or psychological needs. Long-term assistance
cannot be expected in the residence halls setting
and must be obtained through local, private
resource or community agencies. Students requiring
long-term assistance may be evaluated as to
their suitability for continued residence status.
In order to provide students with timely and
quality assistance, hall staff are required
to follow standardized procedures whenever a
student alludes to or engages in self-destructive
or disruptive behaviors. These behaviors. include
but are not limited to remark about suicide,
threats of suicide gestures or attempts, etc.
All situations in which potential suicide may
be a a factor will be reported by residential
life staff so that arrangements for psychological
help can be made. Similar behavior which disrupts
the residence hall community may result in disciplinary
action and/or removal from the residence halls.
Should a student refuse to consult with the
La Sierra University Counseling Center once
an appointment has deemed necessary, the Office
of Residential Life may take action that will
affect residential status of the student. |
