THE BIG ONE IS COMING!
The State of California will be participating in a week of special events featuring the largest earthquake drill, the SHAKE OUT, in U.S. history. It has been organized to inspire Southern Californians to get ready for big earthquakes and to prevent disasters from becoming catastrophes. La Sierra University along with many other organizations will be participating. The following events are scheduled for this time on November 13, 2008 at 10 a.m.:
1. Earthquake Drill:
a. Drop, Cover, and Hold On: Drop to the ground, take Cover under a table or desk, and Hold On to it as if a magnitude 7.8 earthquake were happening (stay down for at least 60 seconds). Practice now so you will immediately protect yourself during earthquakes! (See this page for what to do if in bed, outside, driving, in a tall building, or other situations.).
b. While still under the table, or wherever you are, look around and imagine what would happen in a big earthquake, when shaking may last for 1-2 minutes! What would fall on you or others? What would be damaged? What would life be like after? What will you do before the actual earthquake happens to reduce losses and quickly recover?
c. Finally, you can practice what you will do after the shaking stops.
How will we be notified? Will this be broadcast on TV or online?
While the ShakeOut addresses an important issue in southern California and is therefore likely to attract a lot of media attention, there will be no official “notification” to let people know that the ShakeOut is going on at that moment. Since there are no instructions other than to Drop, Cover, and Hold On, if you cannot participate at that time, do so later that day or think about what you would do if there was a major earthquake.
TEST OF LSU EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION SYSTEM
La Sierra University subscribes to e2Campus Notification Emergency services. We will be conducting a test of this system in conjunction with the earthquake drill on November 13, 2008 at 10 a.m.
