Word from the OISS Office Upcoming Events

Spring has finally arrived! We hope that winter quarter was good and that the new quarter be full of blessings and happiness.

If you're traveling home or abroad during spring break (i.e., Mexico!! :-D), please do not forget to sign your I-20 for travel.

Spring quarter is usually the hardest quarter because the weather is nice, love is everywhere, and it's just very hard to sit down and study. But hang in there; the year is almost done!

We would like to congratulate Sonia Whang, an international student from Argentina, who became the new SALSU Financial Vice President. ¡Felicitaciones!

Immigration Update

DOS Extends Initial F and M Visa Filing Window to 120 Days
This February 9, 2006 U.S. Department of State (DOS) cable instructs consular posts that persons applying for initial-entry F-1, F-2, M-1, and M-2 visas may now be issued these visas up to 120 days before the program start date as listed on their I-20s. The prior policy was to issue these visas no more than 90 days prior to the F or M program start date.

The 90-120 day policy change was previously announced in January 2006 in a Rice-Chertoff Joint Vision statement. An additional change announced in that statement would also lengthen the time a student can be admitted to the United States before his or her program start date, from 30 days to 45 days. That change, however, will not become effective until the Code of Federal Regulations is amended by DHS. And so, although F and M visas can now be issued to new students up to 120 days prior to the start date on their Form I-20, new F and M students can still not be admitted earlier than 30 days before their program start date.

What's New

Cabo San Lucas

We will begin our Walk to Cabo San Lucas next Wednesday, March 22, at 5:00 p.m. on the Mall (where the Christmas tree is placed). No, we are not actually going to walk to Cabo San Lucas, but we are going to walk the distance, 1,094 miles, over the next year. Please check-out the link for full details: http://www.lasierra.edu/files/WalkCabo.pdf

Those of you who want to walk but can't come Wednesday, March 22, need to drop by Sue Cutis' office (AD 202) and get the appropriate forms. You will also need to have your pedometer calibrated by someone on the Committee.

Miles will be self-reported to scurtis@lasierra.edu on Mondays by 5:00 p.m. Prizes will be given along the way and at the end.

For more information about the Well@LSU program, go to the wellness web site.
