Immigration Update

Check Your I-94 Status Compliance
Remember that you are in compliance with your I-94 status until one of the following occurs: 1. The end date on your form (I-20 Item #5) 2. You stop participating full-time in the program of study described on your form 3. Any of the information on your form changes.

When one of the above does occur, your International Student Advisor has up to two weeks to issue you a new form. So take a few minutes now to get your I-20 and do the following:

1. CHECK PROGRAM END DATE on your I-20 (Item #5). If you plan to study beyond the program end date, please see your International Student Advisor at least one month in advance to request an extension. If your I-20 has expired, please see your International Student Advisor immediately.

2. CHECK PROGRAM LEVEL on your I-20 (Item #4). For example, graduate students who change their degree objectives from PhD to Master's must notify their International Student Advisor immediately. It is best to consult with your International Student Advisor while still thinking about making the change to time it so that you can take full advantage of the 60-day grace period, apply for OPT, and remain eligible for other benefits.

3. CHECK MAJOR on your I-20 (Item #5). Students who change their academic major must notify their International Student Advisor immediately. For graduate students especially, it is best to consult with your International Student Advisor while still thinking about making the change to time it so that you can take full advantage of the 60-day grace period, apply for OPT, and remain eligible for other benefits.

4. CHECK OTHER INFO FOR ACCURACY. If any other info on your current form is incorrect, please bring it to the attention of your International Student Advisor immediately.

Travel Outside the USA
Are you planning a trip outside of the USA? Don't forget you need a valid signature from the OISS on your I-20. The signature is valid for five months.

To reenter the USA, you must also present the following at the port-of-entry:
1) Current passport valid for the next 6 months
2) Valid visa
3) Valid I-20 with signature on page 3 with signature on page 3

If you are on OPT, you will also need:
1) EAD card
2) Job Offer Letter

If you need a signature, please bring your document to the OISS. It will be ready for pick-up within 24-48 hours.

NSEERS: National Security Entry-Exit Registration System

If you are subject to the NSEERS, please remember:

1) You must go through departure registration when you leave the USA. Several ports of departure are designated to handle NSEERS registration. Please refer to the NSEERS information sheet for a list of ports of departure. It is available at http://www.ice.gov/graphics/specialregistration/WalkawayMaterial.pdf

At the port of departure, you must appear in person and leave from that port on the same day. Failure to register your departure may delay your reentry into the USA.

2) You must notify the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) of your new address within 10 days of moving. F-1 or J-1 students (students with SEVIS records): Update StudentLink with your new current address. Form AR-11 is NOT required. Non F-1 or J-1 students (students WITHOUT SEVIS records): Update TritonLink with your new current address and submit Form AR-11 to DHS. The form is available at http://uscis.gov/graphics/formsfee/forms/files/ar-11sr.pdf

>> Medical Insurance
On January 1, 2006, your new insurance coverage will take effect. Due to continuing rise of medical costs and submitted claims, the new insurance premiums will be $85/mo or $255 quarter. Contact our office if you have any questions regarding your insurance.

>> Winter Registration
starts on November 28, 2005. Remember that you will have three holds on your account: IA (Current Address), I# (Quarter Break), & RI (Need permission to withdraw). All these three holds can be extended by calling our office at 951-785-2237. When you call, tell the office assistant that you're an international student and need to have the holds extended. This procedure applies ONLY to those three holds. If you have any other hold, you might have to come to the office in person, depending what the hold it is.
