Your Questions Answered

What is the Psychology Colloquium?

Psychology Colloquium is devoted to exploring current topics in psychology and professional issues in the field. Enrollment in the quarter of the student’s choice for participation throughout the year. S/U grade. May be repeated for credit. Attendance at eight colloquia is required per half-unit of enrollment.

Who should register for the Colloquium?

All first year, Sophomore, and Junior Psychology and Psychobiology majors, and Senior Psychology and Psychobiology majors (unless you have chosen to graduate under the old curriculum and have already completed your colloquium requirement). You should register Fall quarter if possible, but you may register Winter or Spring if you prefer. You should not register more than one quarter per year without consulting your advisor.

Do I register as PSYC 219 or PSYC 419?

First year and Sophomore students register for PSYC 219; Juniors and Seniors register for PSYC 419.

Can I come to colloquium now and register for the class later?

Yes!  Sign up for attendance anyway, and we’ll keep track.

How do I know when we are meeting and what the topics are?

1) Check the Psychology web site (http://www.lasierra.edu/psychology; the next colloquium is usually listed a week before it occurs, and the “Calendar” link lists all of the colloquia for the entire academic year; 2) sign up for the Psychology Department email list (go to http://www.lasierra.edu/mailman/listinfo/psychology_ml, and fill out the form); 3) check the Info sheet, or 4) check the Psychology Department bulletin board.  We meet on Tuesdays at 11am, on nearly every day that there is not a University-wide assembly.

Do I have to come to all of the colloquia? How do grades work?

For each colloquium you attend, you get 1 point.  Once you have eight points, you get a “satisfactory” grade for colloquium.  You will get an “in-progress” grade until you have attended eight colloquia.  Note that there are usually 16 colloquia throughout the year, so you can choose which ones seem most interesting, or you can attend them all and get 1 unit of credit for the year.  Because you only have to attend 50% of the colloquia, no excuses are allowed for any reason.

What if I come late?

If you come after 11:05am, you get ½ point for that day.

What if I leave early?

If you leave before 11:50am (or whenever the colloquium is finished, if earlier), you get ½ point for that day.

What if I come late and leave early?

½ point x ½ point = ¼ point.

How do I find out my attendance record?

1) Ask Paul Mallery, (909) 785-2528, pmallery@lasierra.edu, PS 114A; 2) you will get a letter about once per quarter letting you know your current attendance record; 3) we will email you your grades about once per month.

If I am one or two activities short, can I go to an outside activity on my own to make up for it?

Yes, but only if a) the activity is something appropriate for a colloquium, b) you get permission from the course coordinator before attending the outside activity, and c) you submit a one-page written summary of what you learned in the outside activity.  Note that outside activities are allowed only under unusual circumstances (for example, if you attend a convention or conference).
