costa rica is a unique Central American country of extraordinary natural beauty. visitors can experience it's rich rainforests, abundant tropical wildlife, gorgeous beaches, and breathtaking mountain ranges. Because it has not had an army since 1948, Costa Rica, like Switzerland, to which it's often compared, is a neutral country with one of the highest literacy rates in all of Latin America. Peace-loving Costa Ricans were honored in 1987 through their president, Dr. Oscar Arias, who won the Nobel Peace Prize for his successful efforts in bring peace to Central America.
