Laura Sámano: Spanish Major

Laura Sámano is a 2009 graduate with a Spanish major and a second major in Communications. We are proud of Laura’s accomplishments so far and are confident that she has a bright future ahead of her.

English: 

“I have always liked the idea of working in mass media communications. While studying in high school, I was director and editor of the monthly newspaper at two of my churches. When I was studying at Sagunto Adventist College, I was the director of one of the programs that was broadcast through the Spanish Adventist radio from Sagunto, Valencia, in Spain. The program focused on presenting the American kids’ perspective regarding religious matters. Our audience was primarily from Spain. Many times before the program I would translate, from English to Castilian Spanish, what the kids wanted to say so that our audience could understand. During the years that I was at La Sierra University, I was a Spanish tutor for individuals and small groups. During the spring quarter of my last year at La Sierra I did an internship in the University Relations Department at La Sierra University. After graduating from La Sierra University with two degrees, one in Communication with an emphasis in public relations and advertising, and one in Spanish, I volunteered in the Communication Department of the Southeastern California Conference under the supervision of Jocelyn Fay. During the fall of 2009, I did an internship with the City of Riverside, City Hall. 

    Today, I am the editorial assistant for Fred Kinsey and Ernest Castillo. Kinsey is the Assistant to the President for Communication of the North American Division. Ernesto Castillo is the Vicepresident for Multicultural Affairs for the Division. At the communication office I am in charge of publishing a weekly informative bulletin that is sent, via email, to leaders in the North American Division and is published on the internet. At the Multicultural Affairs Office, I am in charge of coordinating meetings among the different ministries and translating documents. 

    During the Adventist Church World Session in Atlanta, Georgia, I will be a part of the daily news writing team for the iPhone application. I will have the responsibility of reading the news and make final corrections before uploading them to the iPhone application. I will be working with communication directors and designers from diverse unions across the North American Division.”

“Siempre me ha gustado la idea de trabajar en medios de comunicación masivos. Mientras estudiaba la preparatoria (high school) fui directora y editora del periódico mensual de dos de mis iglesias. Cuando estuve estudiando en el Colegio Adventista de Sagunto, fui  directora de uno de los programas que transmitía la radio adventista española desde Sagunto, Valencia en España. El foco del programa era el presentar la perspectiva de los chicos americanos sobre asuntos religiosos. Nuestro público era mayormente de España. Muchas veces, antes del programa, yo solía traducir, del inglés al castellano,  lo que los chicos querían decir para que nuestro público lo entendiera.

Durante los años que estuve en La Universidad de La Sierra, fui tutora de español de grupos pequeños y  de individuos. En la primavera de mi último año en La Sierra hice una pasantía en el departamento de relaciones públicas de La Universidad de La Sierra.  Después de graduarme de La Universidad de La Sierra con dos licenciaturas, una en Comunicación, con énfasis en relaciones públicas y publicidad y otra en Español,  fui voluntaria en el Departamento de Comunicación de Southeastern California Conference bajo la supervisión de Jocelyn Fay. En el otoño de 2009 hice una pasantía en con el City of Riverside City Hall.

                Hoy en día, soy asistente editorial para Fred Kinsey y Ernest Castillo. Kinsey es Asistente al Presidente de la División Norteamericana para Comunicación. Ernesto Castillo es Vicepresidente de la División para asuntos multiculturales. En la oficina de comunicación estoy encargada de publicar semanalmente un boletín informativo que se les envía, vía correo electrónico, a líderes de la división norteamericana y que se publica en internet. En la oficina de asuntos multiculturales estoy encargada de coordinar juntas de los diferentes ministerios y traducir documentos.

                Durante la Sesión de la Iglesia Adventista Mundial en Atlanta, Georgia seré parte del equipo de escritores de noticias diarias para la aplicación informática de iPhone. (please Help me with the translation for that.) Tendré la responsabilidad de leer las noticias y hacer correcciones finales antes de subirlas a la aplicación iPhone. Estaré trabajando con directores de comunicación y diseñadores de diversas uniones de la División Norteamericana.”
