Liberal Arts, B.A.

The Liberal Arts major is a diversified major.  A degree in the liberal arts combines all the major areas of curriculum and can be tailored to individualized student interests and needs.

Career Opportunities

With the inclusion or addition of required professional education courses, this degree is also very useful for those who want to earn California multiple subjects elementary education teaching credentials.

The Liberal Arts major prepares the student for a wide variety of career options or can be used as the basis for admission into a variety of post-baccalaureate degree programs.

Preparation for credentialing in elementary education is possible through careful course selection.  Students who want to earn a California teaching credential should contact the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in La Sierra University's School of Education.

Course Overview

A total of 190 quarter units (60 upper division) is required for graduation; 44 of the last 56 units (including 16 in the major) must be taken at La Sierra University. The liberal arts curriculum is divided among three areas: general education requirements, major courses, and general electives.

The Liberal Arts major consists of 68 units (32 upper division); including courses from four areas, plus additional courses in one area for an individualized concentration as follows:

Humanities (16 units)

  • Fine Arts (history or appreciation of architecture, art, drama, music, or theater)
  • History and Culture
  • Philosophy
  • Religious Studies (except Church and Ministry)
  • World Languages

English/Communication (16 units)

  • Communication Skills
  • English Composition
  • Literature

Mathematics/Science (12 units)

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Computer Science
  • Environmental Science
  • Geology
  • Mathematics/Statistics
  • Physical Anthropology
  • Physical Geography
  • Physics

Social Sciences (12 units)

  • Anthropology (except Physical)
  • Child Development
  • Economics
  • Geography (except Physical)
  • Psychology
  • Political Science
  • Sociology

Concentration (12 units)

  • Any one of the above areas, or Studio Arts

Course Schedule

New classes are scheduled each quarter.  Class schedules are mailed out 2-3 weeks before the end of each quarter, prior to the opening of registration.  (DCS classes do not appear on the online course schedule as they are only available to DCS students.)
