BYU – FLATS Information Sheet
The Foreign Language Testing Program through Brigham Young University provides tests for credit for over 50 languages. Students who have acquired a certain level of competency can receive credit for language skill achieved.
Currently enrolled students requesting to pass out of a foreign language may request to take the BYU – FLATS Test. Exams will only be given during the regular school year. You will need to contact BYU at:
http://flats.byu.edu and click on Tests by Correspondence. In the next box down you will click on For Students and then you can choose to see the types of exams offered or register for the exam.
Total Cost of Exam is $285 (all fees are non-refundable)
BYU requires a $50 fee per test due when you submit your form
LSU proctoring fee is $35 due at the time of your exam
LSU equivalency exam recording fee is $200 due at time of your exam
There are no test preparation materials available. The most successful way to prepare for any given test is to review your reading ability. It is also helpful if you have a friend to practice both listening and speaking of the language.
Most tests have a listening, reading, and grammar component. The tests are in a multiple choice format, with answers being marked on a scantron answer sheet, not written in the test booklet. Most tests require at least a 60-70% to pass; this varies based on the difficulty of the language. All tests are on a pass/fail basis and graded credit will not be given. Students are allowed two and half hours to complete the test
This test is pass or fail based on level of competency. To determine the number of units you will receive you will need to contact Admissions and Records. Results will be mailed within 6-8 weeks of the testing date from BYU to Admissions and Records. A copy will also be sent to you at the address indicated on the form, and a copy will be placed on file in the BYU office.
