RIVERSIDE, Calif. – History, religion, literature, art, music, cooking, travel – nearly 3,000 books on these topics and more are available to the public at the La Sierra University Library annual spring sale.

The sale began March 28 and extends through June 5. On May 9, following previous price reductions, the library began offering hardcover books for $1 each, down from $3 each, and paperbacks for 25 cents each. Prices on remaining book sets, originally ranging from $25 to $100, have also been reduced.

“This year we received a large donation of fairly new history books, covering many areas but especially World War II,” said Library Director Kitty Simmons. “Religion is probably the next major subject area represented. There really is something for everyone -- the social sciences are also available. We are also offering a 1992 Collier’s Encyclopedia.”

The library conducts an annual spring cleaning of books that need to be discarded due to duplication or publication of newer editions, and that have been donated by community members and university faculty and staff. The library sells the books at low prices during the university’s spring quarter. Proceeds help purchase additional items for the library such as art pieces, an atrium fountain and other items.

“Last year we purchased two Herman Miller ‘swoop chairs’ with our book sale money. We don't have specific plans for this year’s funds, but typically we have used it for furniture, art, and similar accessories for the library that we aren't able to afford from the regular budget,” said Simmons.

The sale offers 23 book sets including the twelve-volume “Expository Bible Commentary,” a four-volume set of “Collected Writings of John Murray,” a six-volume boxed set of the Ellen White biography, the 10-volume “Story of Civilization” by Will Durant, and a five-volume set of “The Spiderwick Chronicles.”

Book sale shoppers will take home their purchases in eco-friendly bags provided by the library. The book sale is open during library operating hours of 8 a.m. – 12 a.m. Mon. – Thurs.; 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. Fri.; and 1 p.m. – 12 a.m. Sun. For further information call 951-785-2515 or 951-785-2044. The library is located off of Middle Campus Drive.
