Eleven So Cal artists to exhibit prints at La Sierra

Eleven artists from around Southern California will exhibit a show of prints at La Sierra University this month that vary widely in message and in artistic media.

The show, titled “Person, Place or Thing: Artists Working in Print,” will open Nov. 14 at La Sierra's Brandstater Gallery with a reception and artists' panel from 6-8 p.m. Admission is free. The exhibit will run through Dec. 8 and will end with a closing reception on that day from 6-8 p.m. featuring a talk by show curator and participating artist Todd A. Smith.

The exhibit will showcase works by the following artists: Jenny Herrick, Jennifer D. Anderson, Flora Kao, Nancy Jo Haselbacher, Brennan Wheeler, Tim Musso, Camilla Taylor, Pat Chapman, Denise Kraemer, Kimiko Miyoshi, and Smith.

The exhibit brings a broad range of artists who use printed images to address concerns about the human condition, geography, and materialism.  From Herrick's large-scale etching silhouettes of road kill to Kao's ethereal “blueprint” freeway prints, Person, Place or Thing is as much about each artist's processes and ideas as it is about their final prints.

Some of the artists use non-traditional media such as tarpaper, vellum, fabric, ceramics, and wood, while others explore new ideas and imagery through traditional techniques with powerful visual results. Miyoshi works with the imperfections found in discarded plywood and window screens to create her beautifully printed and painted Horror Vacui Series, a contemporary take on the ornate tendencies of Victorian aesthetics with an eye towards reclaiming mundane and damaged objects.
